If you’re like most of my friends, you want to improve. You invest time in personal development and reading great books. This is huge! But if you want to learn and grow even faster, you should add podcasts to your personal development routine.
In my experience, the two huge advantages of podcasts over books are:
1) Leveraging your time. Podcasts allow you to learn even while completing other tasks.
For example, I have a fairly lengthy morning routine. It includes activities like starting the laundry, emptying the dishwasher, and decluttering my office. They’re basically mindless, physical tasks, so I can easily complete them while listening to something engaging. By listening to an inspiring podcast, I can get more done in less time and start my day off on the right foot. In addition, I frequently listen to podcasts while driving, and at the beginning of my workouts.
2) Getting a different perspective. As I mentioned earlier, most people I know who are into personal development read books. Books are irreplaceable. However, podcasts are’t just books on tape. They’re typically more informal, less structured. More like a conversation than a presentation. So, they give you the opportunity to “hang out” with your virtual mentor.
For example, I and a number of my friends are big Jillian Michaels fans. I’ve watched her on the Biggest Loser, and I love her workout videos. She’s written books, and now has a speaking tour. Listening to her podcast is one of the ways that I get to absorb her mindset. Listening to her podcast is much like eavesdropping on a focused conversation between her and her friends (and even her kids on occasion!).
You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

Want to be influenced by brilliant, successful people like Jillian Michaels or maybe Dave Ramsey, Seth Godin, or Rick Warren? Find their podcast. Listen to interviews with them. Let your mind be changed by “hanging out” with the people you admire.
